Problems with FTP...at wits end here (4 posts)

Ok, so I've been happily writng away on my blog (www.eliboat.com) and I have been having a really irritating problem with FTP. When I try to upload or change any file on the ftp server it just times out and fails to do anything. With uploads I get about 8k into the transefer and then it just poops out. I have enabled my software firewalls to allow ftp access, and this doesn't seem to be the cause anyways because I am having the same problem using my Mac which is not behind any software firewalls. I have a router that has a firewall, but I have set everything to allow FTP on Port 21 with TCP, and my Windows machine is set to be in the DMZ...so theoretically it should not be influenced by the firewall. As an experiment I had my brother log into the server from his machine out in Chicago, and he had no problems uploading a file. Does anyone know what to do here?

Change FTP software? I've had similar problems and I changed FTP software and it seemed to be fixed. Then I went back to the original software because I couldn't stand the new one, and it worked perfectly. Worth a try ;)

Also, if you are on Comcast or one of their "affiliates", they have been having all kinds of problems with sites timing out. There is nothing wrong with you, with the site, with the server, it's a Comcast problem that resolves itself within an hour or so. I've been fighting this for two weeks. There is a solution that you can find by searching the net for something like "Comcast timeouts DNS server" or some combination like that, but if you aren't on Comcast, there is something else going on.

Try switching FTP software. WindowsXP has one built in, if you are looking for really simple, but it is slow. It's MSIE or Windows Explorer with the ftp address in the address window. I also use SmartFTP, but you can try whatever you want and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks for the response. I have tried four different FTP clients on two different operating systems, so the problem is not with the software. I don't have Comcast, so there is no problem there either. My brother has Comcast, and he was able to upload to the site without a problem. I am thinking that this is a router problem, but I have done everything in my power to make sure that things go smoothly on that front
