    Hi

I'm fairly new to WordPress so I'm hoping someone could help me with this issue that I've been having.

When I try to upload images there not displaying in the media library or even on the website all I can see is a placeholder for the thumbnail. When I try the edit image option then the actual image shows up but thats it. I'm not sure whether its a path or linking issue but I've been having this issue for a few days now. The weird thing is all my images seem to show up under the regular domain.com but they won't show under the sub.domain.com. I'm really hoping someone has a solution to this problem for me and can help me out with fixing it.

    Thanks!

  2. 1) double check your .htaccess

    2) check that your httpd.conf file has AllowOverride set to all

    First Thanks for responding,

I tried checking the .htaccess file and I don't have one on my server side in the domain folder. I did some research and found out that I needed to create the actual file in order to have. When I created the file and added the script that was listed for the Network Setup there was an Internal Server Error 500 which blocked my website. I contacted my hosting company and they informed me that the .htaccess file would block my website if I used it. When I removed the file the site came back up immediately. So I'm not sure what to do at this point because it seems as though I'm going in circles with trying to figure this out.

Can you explain a little more about the httpd.conf file? I really want to figure this out soon.

Well. Yes, you need one. Don't worry about the httpd.conf. If you can't have a .htaccess, Mutlisite won't work.

What code did you put into the .htaccess? Can you copy/paste it here.

I don't understand, everything is working except the images are not displaying properly like they should be. It just seems as though there is a broken link or path with the images somewhere. The only thing that is showing is a placeholder where the image should be. So I don't understand why a Multisite wouldn't work.

Also here is the code that I used:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]

    # uploaded files
    RewriteRule ^files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$1 [L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule ^ - [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

Also I contacted my hosting company and they were wondering what is the purpose of the .htaccess file. I tried explaining it to them but wasn't successful. Could you explain to me what it is for? I want to have a better understanding of what it is for so that I can explain it better to them.

    Thanks!

  7. The problem is that Multisite requires that .htaccess to work. Period. It has to work.

    RewriteRule ^files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$1 [L]

That line is what makes your images work.

However if your hosting company doesn't know what a .htaccess is for, I'd be seriously considering a new host. That's basic server 101! Even a windows IIS shop knows that stuff!

Are you sure your host supports WordPress at all? And if so, what kind of server are you on?

AWESOME!!!!! I got it...I got it...I got it...I'm so EXCITED!!!! I finally got it working and it wasn't my fault either. The hosting company had to place the .htaccess file on the server themselves in order for me to EDIT and place the WP script for the NETWORK setup. It seems as though every time I tried to place the .htaccess file on the server it wouldn't work or it blocked me from doing it. So I told them that I needed an .htaccess file for WP and they placed it on the server and I edited it with the NETWORK setup script. So now its working and all my images are showing up...AWESOME!!!!

I really appreciate all your HELP with this issue. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have been able to ask the appropriate questions to the hosting company.

    THANKS!
