Problems creating a local version of my live wordpress site (2 posts)

    Hello everyone,

I used to blog on WordPress.com but made the move to WordPress.org and my own domain 6 months ago.

My site has been gaining traffic slowly and is now the 31st most popular site in Ethiopia (according to Alexa.com).

When I moved my site to my own domain I stuck with the same theme I had - Coraline - and any changes I made on the live site.

However, I'd now like to make some rather big changes to the blog's theme and plugins I've installed. I want to reorganize categories and basically do some major spring cleaning. I'd like to do this locally on a testing site to minimize inconveniences to my audience. Once I'm happy I want to make the revised site live.

So I followed the instruction in the WordPress Codex about moving a wordpress site.

I backed up all the content and the database. I created a new database on my laptop (Where I'll be doing all the work), imported the database, made changes to the wp-config file, changed the home and site url in the wp-options table and still the site does not work locally.

I have a hunch it may have something to do with urls, but shouldn't that work fine if I have the .htaccess from the live site in the local site's folder as well?

Looking forward to your response and thanks in advance,

    Best regards,
    David Kirba

The .htaccess file might be the problem. Try deleting it and having WP regenerate it by resetting permalinks to default and then back to your 'live' settings.
