• Hi folks, WordPress was installed by person who made my website. 2010 theme, version ?3.1.2. I thought they took a backup, but find out they didnt.

Problem: WP was updated to 3.4.1
    – dashboard changed in layout
    – had 4 footer areas on right side – all gone
    (contains code for google friends
    rss feed
recipe link still active to recipe tab on homepage – which was deleted.
    – menu on left of dashboard changed. nothing in tools, only have Press This there nothing else. cant backup in WP etc.
    – list of widgets no longer available.

    Wondering
    – if I download the latest version of 2010 (1.4) will this get me back to where I was in dashboard…..
    – or do I need to revert back to WP version 3.1.2?
_ can I uninstall the update and get back original?

I desperately need help to fix blog and get it back to how it was.
    Original techy not available.
I am a newbie and require very simple responses.
I have searched database and found a few pages but dont understand fully how to do things.

Appreciate any advice you can give.
    cheers.

  • You don’t want to go back to 3.1.2 There are known security vulnerabilities that have been patched in newer versions. You really need to get your theme updated (built right) so that it keeps working. I’ve got a number of clients which had their theme built for 3.1 that are still using it without issues.

For backup, you need to make sure that you are taking backups of the site. Install BackWPUp or purchase BackUpBuddy.

Surely not what you want to hear, but that’s what you should be doing.

    thanks for the backupbuddy info.

can I download the latest twentyten theme without causing extra problems to what I have, to get my dashboard, widgets etc back…before backing up? Will that work.

    Hi,
I think I just found out what my main problem is.

    WP 3.1 req. PHP 4.3, MySQL 4.1.2
    WP3.2 req 5.2.4 5.0+

    I am running 3.4.1
My host says I only have PHP 5.2.17 MySQL 5.0.95
    mod_rewrite apache module is onboard.

What on earth can I do now to get my blog back ?
Difficult to change webhosts….and missing out on security fix updates.

    addit
that should read WP3.2 PHP 5.2.4 MySQL 5.0+

Get a better host that is supporting up to date versions of PHP. I prefer Media Temple but Bluehost is a great choice and Dreamhost just hired Ipstenu of WordPress forum moderator fame so it would also be a great choice.

Sounds like person who made your website modified the twentyten theme directly and when you updated, the theme got overwritten with the newer version. Unfortunately if this is the case there is nothing you can do to get those changes back without a backup.

WordPress will still work on those earlier versions of PHP and it might also help if you could provide us with a link to your site.

Hi guys, many thanks for your responses.

I was wondering if moving my blog back to wordpress.com and updating the latest version and theme is an option to get the site back to where it was….or will I need to rebuild from scratch and find another host? At the moment my blog is part of my website, with the link on my home page.

Your hosting recommendations look very good Curtis. Local servers are always ok in the beginning, but I am now finding they do not update their features very often to cope with constant program fixes.

Not sure if theme was modified Chris. I didn’t receive any info re this from the designer.
