  • I’m missing the .htaccess file (long story !!) and therefore none of the links to my posts are working. I know I need to recreate it and I’ve searched here for an answer but can’t find anything specific. I don’t know what’s supposed to be in it? I did try copying one from another wordpress installation I had and just changed the domain but that was in a folder this is in it’s own domain so I may not have adjusted it correctly. Anyway just wondering if anyone can shed any light on what’s supposed to be in the .htaccess file that’s held in the root in order for my post permalinks to work correctly

    thank youi

  • When you save your permalink settings WP either writes the htaccess for you OR it displayes (down at the bottom of the page!!!) the exact code you need.

Always look around in your own admin before doing anything else 🙂

Thanks I thought it should have created it for me but it didn’t but I hadn’t realised it would show it a the bottom of the page, so I’ll check that. Thanks 🙂

Yes that sorted it many thanks 🙂

Hi. I am coming up with the same problem. I cannot see the .htaccess file on my server database (with invisible files showing). Additionally, I’ve confirmed that its not there with my server admin.

Also, I’ve downloaded a new copy of WP2.5.1, looking for the .htaccess file, with no luck. And thinking that I couldn’t see it b/c of invisible files (I’m on MacOS 10.4.1) I even hacked the finder, showing invisible files. The file does not appear to be there.

So…I’ve noticed on several FAQs and in this thread, that WP should write the file for me? It doesn’t appear to do this, either. I suppose my options are creating a document titled “.htaccess” and c/p the code supplied via the Permalinks dashboard setting?

    What am I doing wrong?

    thanks, Michael

    Yes, basically. Do that.

Oh gosh, now I’m embarrassed. The .htaccess file WAS there (when I re-hacked the finder), but the MacOs finder added “.txt” extension to it. I changed that, uploaded, and now Permalinks work!

Still, it’s nice to know that I could have just created the file from scratch with the supplied code, as you mentioned above.

    Thanks for the quick response.
