[resolved] Problem Uploading Custom Theme (6 posts)

I've been developing a custom theme for a friend's website, but I'm having a problem uploading it to either a local installation of wordpress, or a live site on the web. I've tried manually placing the theme directory in the wp-content/themes directory, but the new theme does not appear in the theme dashboard. I have both a style.css and index.php with the heading from the codex? Are there any ideas as to why this might not be working?

Let me know if you need any more details.

Can you please post the comment block from the theme's style.css. Please read the forum rules on posting code before you do so, if you haven't done so already.

    Cheers

On my local machine, I created a directory:

    /path/to/wp/wp-content/themes/brendanstheme

In that directory I created a file called style.css and copied your comments into it.

Then I created another file (index.php), which I left empty.

The theme shows up just fine in Dashboard-->Appearance-->Themes

I suggest you check your file names and locations first. If you still can't see what's wrong, try doing the same as I've just done. When you've got that working, you can copy the remaining content of those two files into them - and copy in the rest of your files, obviously.

Great, thank you, I will try that this evening, and report back.

Thank you for the advice, I did just that, adding one file at a time, and it worked. I don't know what the problem was, but its resolved.
