I'm new to wordpress, and have minimal knowledge about sql. I have the database set up at a server. I'm getting to the install button after changing the config file, then.."Error establishing a database connection"
I had a database running for a while on same server, but in a subdomain, so compatibility with my version of sql should be ok.
Error establishing a database connection
99.9% of the time this means one of the DB values is wrong in wp-config.php

Solved! I didn't get that the files and folders had to be at the root of domain (when running database from root). I had a wordpress directory. Reinstalled all, and it seems like I'm up and running. Thanks anyway!

ok I had the same problem, and only after doing a db connection test with this script http://www.webune.com/forums/testing-mysql-database-connection-script.html and realizing that I actually WAS connecting with several users and passwords, did I find this particular thread that said to move it to the root folder.
This is RIDICULOUS. I've spent hours on this, following the "famous 5-minute install" instructions included in the tarball, which don't even apply to people who download that file! Not only that, but the error message given isn't the least bit helpful.
Why was this very simple step omitted from the directions and why can't the fricken thing run from another directory? Share the Love? Grrrrrr.
