I'd like to use wordpress for a family website, but I don't the whole wide world to see our vacation photos, birthdates, and such. Is there a way to make the site content only viewable by registered users? Ideally any URL would just redirect to "log in here" with a few public information links.
IIRC with other publishing software, you could restrict content views to registered users by default - is that possible here?

What happened to that vaunted open source support? I was assured that when I asked for help, it would be there? How can I pay for support for wordpress?

WP is open source, there is no paid support. These forums are visited by users who like to help out whenever they have time.

I was assured that open source projects provided support. I suppose I was misinformed. I apologize for the inconvenience, administrators may delete this thread.
Assured by who? On these forums, support is provided by volunteers who have no obligation whatsoever to help you, but may (or may not) choose to give up their free time to do so.
One option to make your site private is the Registered Users Only plugin (something else provided by a volunteer).
For paid support, try the WP Pro mailing list.
