• Hi all,
What I want to achieve is having a completely private site available only to friends and family members who must register a unique username and password to access it. The login section can be either on the main page or in the sideabar. Does anybody know of a plugin that works with 2.8.1 (or above) version? Something similar to the login for this forum to give you some idea.

    Thanks, Shaun

  • why do you need a plugin for this?

completely private sites are easily accomplished by not sharing the url, wherever it is, and not letting it be indexed (which is already doable with wordpress w/o a plugin).

as for the registration stuff, thats already buiilt into wordpress (again- no plugin needed).

I’m new to WP so I dont exactly know what you mean by “not sharing the URL” and also “not letting it be indexed”. Can you elaborate a bit more please?

Not sharing the URL doesn’t help much if other people link to it. :/ If your blog is visible by simply going to the URL, other people can find it.

“Not letting it be indexed” means not letting search engines like Google or MSN view your site. This can be done in the Settings > Privacy section by selecting the “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors” option.

There is also a plugin called Members Only that will allow you to require all users to log in to see your blog, if you are still interested. It’s what I use on my family site.
