• Ok folks – I have a new problem. Have been searching for plugins but may appear not working, unavailable etc.
Im using latest WP ver 2x.
I wish to make a category PRIVATE along with its posts & comments.
This category to be accessable by “subscribed” or registered persons only. I dont need to mail these people – just have a way of restricting who accesses and views the posts/comments etc.

Does anyone know of a working plugin – eg one that seems ok is on edwards.org but thats down for ugrades etc.
    Thanks

  • Category Access allows you to specifically select who can read categories. You can control what guests can read, what new subscribers can read, and then I think by default, authors etc. can read everything. There are some user level controls as well I believe.

Hey Manstraw, thanks for that. I will try it right now.
Have you come across a Plugin that specifically deals with Subscription registration? – Im still new to WP2x.
    Cheers

I’m not sure what you mean. Category Access has settings for guests and subscribers, as in which categories they can automatically read. What else do you want to do with subscription registration?

Sorry – maybe Im misunderstanding the menu settings – do you mean the “new user” on the left side is a new subscriber? I guess that is the case.
What I am now looking for is a way to “cleanly” accept a “new subscriber”.

Cat Access does not seem to tell me at what level to set a “new user”. For instance – If I have a new group of people that specifically subscribe to an area – whats the best way to handle that inside WP or a plugin so that Cat Access understands its this new group.
Otherwise I assume I take the new users and give them subscriber rights in WP?
    Sorry to be dense.

first of all, I recommend you experiment with it a bit. with a default installation of wordpress, and new user is set to the Subscriber role. I’m not sure how category access behaves if you have your new user set to be another role, like Author. It may be specifically coded for Subscribers. Like I said, experiment.

Subscribers are meant to be people who can read but not write posts for the blog. It’s typically the role you assign when you want to require someone to register before they can comment on a post.

I recommend you keep your new users set to Subscriber. You set that in Options > General. Then, in the Category Access options, consider New Users to mean Subscribers and configure it appropriately. As far as I can tell, that will achieve what you want.

Thanks – I play around – seems to work ok atm.

Let me try a different explanation:

Users in WP must be registered to post (if configured that way). What I want to do is offer a specific area of the blog (could be done by cat access, I guess) but only access to that area if the user pays me a monthly fee. That gets them the posting to all areas except the subscription area.

The other issue would be to tie in the billing aspect to the category access so that discontinuing payment demotes the user to the base level and prevents access to that site.
