I like to make the entire blog private. Under Settings -> privacy I only have two options, not the thrid one to make the entire blog private. How can I get that third option?

I mean: I want to give access only to selected users, who will get their own user names and passwords.
Probably the best way to do this would be outside of WordPress, by Password Protecting your folder. Is this what you are after?
I guess so, but WordPressd seemed to have that option available as well.
you can password protect individual posts, if you make a post 'private', it can only be viewed by editors or admins of the site.
you could take a look through the plugins directory for some which may offer the functionality you're looking for.
This is working well for me on WP 3.2.1
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/registered-users-only/
"Forces all users to login before being able to view your site. Features an options page for configuration."
That's it. Great solution. Thanks ClaytonJames
You're welcome.
I also want to set up a private blog and will look into the plugin mentioned above.
But before I heard of that plugin I was playing around with some ideas in my head. On possibility I came up with was to give my friends accounts with a level of contributor or editor. Leave the default user level as "Subscriber" and then remove the "read" capability from the Subscriber level using a plugin like capabilities manager or similar.
I haven't had a chance to try it yet. But it seems to me that would prevent web crawlers from indexing the site too because they would be accessing the site as subscribers too.
Awesome, thanks for sharing ClaytonJames!
