   I want to prevent people from navigating to files in the wp-content/uploads folder directly, or accessing it at all (including videos called in a podcast), unless they are logged into the site.

   What's the simplest way to do this?

   htaccess directory protecting is a really good way to do that
   it's not really easy(and not really hard) but it's the best and safest;)
   here is a tutorial to do it
