If I use the default permalink setting then everything works.
What is strange (to me anyway) is that when I use a pretty permalink, there is one link on five different posts that is wrong.
I have rewritten my .htaccess and if I search for the bad link in mydatabase it's not there.
Any help would be appreciated.

I did resolve this eventually by meticulously going through the database until I found the link.
I renamed it, and the site no longer has any broken links.
Why oh why does WordPress keep every revision of every post, with no obvious way of deleting them?!
