[resolved] Pretty Permalinks are Breaking My Site (14 posts)

When I switch on Pretty Permalinks (any combination), images begin disappearing on my site. The home page looks fine, but any subsequent page loses its background image, logo, and all the header images in my blog posts. Other images are fine, though.

I thought it might be a GoDaddy thing, but I just switched my site to DreamHost and I'm experiencing the same issues. So, now I don't know what's happening. I've tried manually writing the necessary code into the htaccess file, and I've tried letting WP take care of it. Neither work. Doesn't look like I'm able to get into my httpd.config file through DreamHost, and I don't imagine GoDaddy is any better.

Can anyone help me? I've been scouring help forums but can't seem to find anyone who's dealing with this exact issue. I've seen 404 errors and 500 errors, but no description of my problem and its fix.

Help. If you'd like to see what I'm talking about, please visit:

    Thanks for any help.

I see you get some imgs and some are 404.

Are you sure those 404 images are at new host?

The martyrosamond.com site is a clone of martyrdesign.com that I did today. But, I double checked just now to make sure and they are there.

Is it a root folder permissions thing? What should the root (/) directory be? Right now it's set to xxx. What should my site directory be set to?

Its not a root perm thing; else nothing will work; the page works and many images work

What about the permissin of imgs itself; this one does not work; what is its perm; how is it different from the imgs that works?

Permissions on that image are set to 777.

Something else strange, and this is the first thing I've noticed that's broken on one of the sites but not the other.

    martyrosamond.com/contact

    martyrdesign.com/contact

The "More of My Work" sidebar widget shows up on martyrdesign.com. I just checked, the Contact page on martyrosamond.com is set to have the More of My Work sidebar widget show up, but it's not there.

    None of your /the-blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/

    images work

So if its not permissions, it must be path to the imgs

Add a tiny file to search folder in that path ; then access it directly from your web broswer address bar

I hope somehow while doing this you will realize the mistake with the images.

I wish it were that simple. The paths are solid because the site works fine until I turn on Pretty Permalinks. When I have the site set to Ugly Permalinks, all images load. So, the paths are fine.

Go to the Herbie Hancock blog post:

    http://www.martyrosamond.com/2010/herbie-hancocks-70th-birthday/

and you'll see the NextGen gallery at the bottom is broken, too.

    [nggallery id=3]

That's supposed to be a nice LightView gallery down there.

Thank you so much. You got me studying my image paths and it turns out that was the problem after all. I had some paths that were missing the "/" in front of them, and that was causing the breakage. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Before I hit resolved, let me clear up what the error was (totally my fault).

Instead of putting the full path for my images (e.g.; http://www.martyrdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/filename.jpg), I was using shortened paths (i.e.; /wp-content/uploads/2011/02/filename.jpg), but had forgotten to put the "/" in front of a couple paths, and that was breaking things. I'm still not sure why it affected the NextGen galleries, but they popped into place when I corrected the paths. Also, not quite sure why the info in the sidebar of my Contact page wasn't showing up, but it's OK now. The more I learn, the less I know it seems at times. Thanks again for making me think this through.
