[resolved] preserving Theme, Background etc. during WP.com migration (9 posts)

Are themes, backgrounds, widgets and blavatars importable?

I've just exported a blog from wordpress.com. I imported the file to a self-hosted site. The pages and posts all came through but most of the site architecture was lost. For example, the theme switched from 'twenty ten' to 'twenty eleven' during the export/import. It also defaulted to a blank background, header, site title and tagline. The widgets, blavatar and custom menu were not imported.

I'm not sure if these features were lost during export from wordpress.com or import to the self-hosted site. It sounds like plenty of people have migrated before me so I hope someone can give me insight on if it is possible to preserve the old architecture and how to get it done.

    Thanks

When you move from wordpress.com to self hosted theme is not transferred you will need to reinstall the theme you were using in wordpress.com to your self hosted wordpress.

Easy enough to re-install the theme. In fact I've already replaced the header and background. I assume it is similar answer for the widgets, blavatar, etc, etc.

Unfortunately I was using WP.com's image widget which doesn't seem pre-installed on the latest WP version I just installed on my self-host. Is my only option to download the missing widgets as plug-ins and FTP them to the new server?

    Thanks govpatel.

My site is nearly re-built after transferring off WP.com. However, once I'm fully satisfied and ready to launch the site I will transfer it to another self-hosted site on a different domain.

So if I transfer from self-host to self-host, will I be able to keep all the themes, widgets, plug-ins etc. or will it only transfer the posts/pages and force me to do all the tweaking again?

When you transfer from self-host to self-host, you can export and import the whole database instead of just the posts.

Do that with phpmyadmin or whatever tool your server has for database administration.

You'll also have to transfer the files for the theme and plugins.

Also see the documentation for moving WordPress.

Once you are ready to transfer host to host then you are in full control where as transferring wordpress.com you do not have access to database and wp-content folder where all your themes, plugins and uploads are saved.

So follow the link @fonglh posted

    That is so cool.

One more thing. A lot of my images and links are internally referenced within the self-hosted domain. When I transfer to new host, will the references re-direct to new host or still point to old host? If still point to old host, will I need to manually change all the links?

Yes you will need change any reference to old url with new one in database using Notepad++ search and replace urls from your backup database sql file save as some other name and then import file to new host
