Precondition Failed

    I have been playng with WordPress for over a month now. I like it a lot and was thinking of using it for my entire site. However, something started to happen that I’m not sure how to fix. I read everything on the forum about Precondition Failed error, but could not find a solution or any solution I read did not help.

    So far I found it is happening under two conditions:

    1. When I go to my Admin Section, Plugins Directory and press the link for “Word Press Plugin Directory” at the bottom I get the following error:

    Precondition Failed

    The precondition on the request for the URL /extend/plugins.php/ evaluated to false.

    2. I have had some customers say when using a browser other then Explorer they get this error also.

    I went to my server host (Ipower) and asked for help and they really didn’t show much interest in helping, but provided me the following explanation:

    “The issue is somewhere with your .htaccess file”

    That’s it — that is the extent of their help. I tried to get more help but they said they don’t support WordPress and it isn’t their problem. The only reason I have a .htaccess file is because I use Permalinks. Permalinks seems to work fine.

    Would anyone else have any feed back on this. I have been searching and trying to find a solution for a few weeks but getting no where.

    412 : preconditioned failed

    it’s an output typical of plugins like Bad Behavior or simply, your host is using mod_security filters have them analyze your raw Apache or someother-httpd log files for “HTTP/1.1 412” instances.

    Do you have Bad Behaviour installed? If so, it’s entirely likely coming from that plugin.

    Grab yourself a copy of phpMyAdmin and then browse over into the Bad Behaviour tables, you will see debugging information in there indicating what caused this problem. Bad Behaviour is pretty stringent with it comes to HTTP headers and a lot of programs don’t pass the right values, so you get that problem.

    I used to get it constantly when I use an offline blogging tool.

    Thanks for the feedback. I did find from my search concerning the bad behavior plugin, but I don’t have that plug in.

    Scaturn may I ask you how to specifically ask your suggestion to my host (ipower). They really aren’t helpful and unless I’m as specific as I can be, they willl not help. I’m not knowledgeable enough to reword your suggestion for analyzing my Apache files. Sorry, I guess I wonder what it is that I should ask them to analyze or what specific problem to look for or fix.

    here’s what i would ask them:

    “i’m not fully aware if Ipower provides copies of or store real-time Apache log files (for all my hosted domain names) under my account. i would like to use the log files to analyze & help me pinpoint a number of issues/problems i’m having with. specifically WordPress, a publishing platform. i’m also curious if the Apache server where my hosted sites are running off is configured to issue “412 : Precondition Failed” http responses, which is typical of mod_security or custom prepended php scripts. i can assure you that the WordPress platform i’m using does not have a built-in and/or installed plugins that trigger this specific error, having said that, it has to be at the Apache level.”

    looking at http://ipower.com/webhosting_starter.html – it doesn’t look like they offer a shell account, so there’s no way for you to analyze your logs in real time. you might need to download locally which is a pain.

    also ask them specifically what the version of mysql, Apache, php, Apache-modules are being used to host your site. some of these bugs are specific to certain platforms so the more details provided as to what platform your WordPress is running off, the better feedback there will be.
