Posts and Pages missing in Admin but show on front end

a strange one this. i moved my self-hosted WP blog to a new host, created a new database using a fantastico installer, but then went into phpmyadmin, deleted all the tables and imported the sql file id exported from the previous host.

i have since upgraded WP to 2.8.4 manually (replacing the admin & include folders) and now when i go to edit posts there are none listed. is this a problem with 2.8.4? or does my database need upgrading? i thought this was done automatically

they show fine on the front end of the website so they must be in the database but the admin screen isnt recognising that
