When I create a new post, I set a picture to be the featured image and click 'full size'. It's showing up, but instead of being fullsize, wordpress is cropping it down to 140x150 (thumbnail size) and then blows it back up to 140x207 instead of just using the original size. Anyone know what's happening?
The featured image is always the thumbnail (as configured in Settings -> Media) unless your theme uses a custom post thumbnail.

i reconfigured my thumbnail size in settings-> Media to be the size I want (140x207), but it's still doing the same thing

Now you've changed the thumbnail dimensions, try using the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to regenerate your existing thumbs:
