Support » Installing WordPress » TinyMC Broken in 2.8 Upgrade

  • Hello,

The automatic upgrade went smooth and the dashboard seems faster. The problem is TinyMC no longer works. I went to do a post and all my visual editor options are gone and I can’t seem to type in the box or at least that’s what I thought, but it seems like all the text appears in WHITE against a WHITE background. I installed Dean’s FCE Editor PlugIn and that works perfectly fine.

  • I had the exact same problem — I can’t see the editing options and all text appears white on white. The editing toolbar appears for a split second while the page is loading, so I know it’s there somewhere, but I just can’t see it.

Therefore, with the “new” WordPress 2.8 I can’t blog. Thanks, WordPress team! Glad that it made it out of the testing stage!

I didn’t know what to do until I came across your post on using Dean’s FCKEditor for WordPress, which is working so far.

This means that while Dean’s FCKEditor — made for WordPress 2.2 — is the only thing that lets me write a blog post in WordPress 2.8. I really wish I hadn’t upgraded.

Same here, noticing all sorts of problems the latest being Widgets no longer work.

Might see if something here helps: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/278484

Please report back if you so resolve the problem.

Thank you MichaelH. The solution in that post worked. In case anyone runs into this post, here’s the quick fix:

    In the WP Dashboard:
    Tools > Upgrade > Re-install Automatically

    THEN…

    In Firefox:
Tools > Clear Private Data > Clear Cache

Then, refresh the Dashboard. At that point, once you go to edit a post or page, the editor should show up.

    Much better.

I discovered that after upgrading to 2.8 that the option to turn off the Visual Editor had been selected. When logged in to the backend click on your name in the top right to view your profile and see if there is a checkmark beside the “Disable Visual Editor”. You may want to check the color scheme there also.

    Hope this Helps.

    Using IE 7.x

When I upgraded “manually” to 2.8 from 2.3.1 – EVERY THING SEEMS to be working with the editor.

    On another blog…
When I upgraded “automatically” from 2.7.1 to 2.8 I have the same editing problem…

No editing features with the “visual” editing.

Ok, I got it to work… Here is what I did…

In the TinyMCE folder — I DELETED… ALL… “The Files!” NOT folders.

I uploaded ALL the files (NOT FOLDERS) from the WordPress 2.8 – I DOWNLOADED from the “WordPress.org website.”

ALL seems to work now — with the editor.

There were missing files and files that were not needed it seems.

Earlier I upgraded another blog from 2.3.1 to 2.8 – MANUALLY. All worked fine as the proper files were there – it seems.

    Hope this helps you all!

    Same.
    Several blogs to upgrade.
    Manual upgrade – no problems.
Auto upgrade caused this symptom (loss of visual editor).
    Re-install automatically would not complete.
    Clearing Firefox cache didn’t help.

Many Thanks to rfuchtman for solution above.

A couple of things to add:
TinyMCE folder is found in /wp-includes/js/
(mine contained 11 files instead of 8 in fresh download; 3 extra .php files, I tried just deleting those but it did not seem to work, however if anybody else tries that note next step was also necessary; logout and in again.)

And, I could not see that replacing the files had fixed my problem until I logged out of admin and back in again.

BTW most plugin auto upgrades failing too, so quite a few manual plugin upgrades to work through.

Not the smoothest WP Release upgrade ever, but nothing to rant about – it’s a walk in the park compared to a Magento upgrade!!!

I tried the re-install automatically and clear Firefox cache and it worked great, thansk a lot! 🙂
