    Hi

I decided to try 'pritty permalinks' for my wordpress site, and everything worked fine except the blog posts.

I'm using custom permalinks specified as /%category%/%post-name%/

Currently the url for any blog post is showing as http://www.myurl/thecatergoryname/%post-name%/

...this generates a 'Bad Request - Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.' error.

...so everything else in the URL is correct, but the post-name bit is not being filled in with any information, instead, just reading /%post-name%/

The links work fine when I switch back to default mode in permalinks.

I have a template operating, so the blog is not quite as straight-forward to link to. The Default post category is set to 'Sketch Pad' under 'write settings' - but this has subcategories, and the default Posts page on the reading settings is set to 'D2 Blogs' which is a subcategory under 'Sketch Pad'.

I'm wondering if I need to add a little bit of extra code to make the link work, because of the subcategories, or if the way I've set it up, or if it simply means it doesn't work because for some reason the variable for 'D2 Blogs' cannot be stored properly, so when it's called there is nothing to respond with, or if I need to structure my blog or pages in another way.

When I click on some links, I get the url http://myurl/sketch-pad/sketch-pad/ - which worries me slightly - perhaps this has something to do with it.

    Any ideas, anyone??

Many thanks for your help :)
    Trevor.

    Hi

Thanks for the link - I looked through and tried a couple of different things - the setting "Day and name" on permalink settings page seemed to work - but I don't know why - any idea why this should work, but not custom?

Also, is using permalinks increasing a security risk?

Thank you for your help :)
    Trevor.

Your custom structure was incorrect. You can only use the structure tags listed on the Using_Permalinks page. And no, using permalinks does not create a security risk.
