Possible to modify Twenty Ten WordPress theme? (3 posts)

I'm new to WordPress and set up a presell site using the default Twenty Ten WordPress theme. I found a great image to use for the header but, when I added ten "core" articles as pages, they showed up in a large black box under the header with huge spaces between the four lines. I next added a blog page and switched the articles to posts so they would show up in the right sidebar instead. The first problem was that only five of the ten articles show up under "Recent Posts." (I want all ten to show up since each one might appeal to different people going to the presell page.) The next problem was when new posts that didn't have the same level/quality of conten drove the original articles right off the page.

Is there a way of modifying the Twenty Ten theme so that either:

    1. All ten articles as posts continue to show up in the right sidebar either a) under a new Articles section that wouldhave to be added or b) under Recent Posts....but where they would not be replaced by newer posts?
    2. All ten articles as pages show up in a box under the header image but the box is compressed in height so is doesn't ruin the whole aesthetic look of the page?

Thanks is advance for your help.

Don't edit the Twenty Ten theme! Your changes will be over-written the next time you upgrade WordPress or the theme. For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations.

Thanks esmi. At first blush, the instructions look a little intimidating for someone with my limited WordPress/technical skills. However, the basic advice to use a child theme is well taken and I will seek help to implement the customizations.
