Good news: default urls (aka ?p=199 style) always work, regardless of what pretty Permalink style in use. 🙂
Hey that sounds promising but could you explain that in laymens terms? Does that mean if i change to this format /2007/03/18/sample-post/…incoming links using the older ?=199 would still work as well?
Exactly.
For example: I use pretty Permalinks.
I have an article at this url: http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/2007/03/18/wordpress-plugin-directory/
This url (default style permalinks) will work as well: http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/?p=1057
Going from default to pretty = easy/painless.
Changing from one pretty style to a different style = pain in the butt. Pick the pretty permalink style you’re going to love the first try. 😉
Holy shit..I didn’t know this! I have been wanting to use the pretty permalinks for months but I thought if I changed the defaults urls all the old incoming links would be lost. I did change to pretty permalinks and the incoming links are still good.
HandySolo thanks for this info!
Out of curiosity I chose /%postname%.html
to be my permalink (did not use dates at all just /website/postname.html). I’m wondering if two posts have the same name what would happen?

Anarchy.
Locust Plagues!
Well, actually, I haven’t a clue. I’d guess that one of them would no longer be accessible. Worst case, you can adjust the Post Slug on the post editor (right sidebar) to help keep ’em unique if that happens.
Hmm I did run into a problem.
I set up my permalinks to be like this http://url/postname.html
initially it works. I can browse main index, archives, etc, select a particular post and get the singple post view. The problem is after this.
I have navigation to my categories on a horizontal bar below the header. If I click a category…the url will become
http://url/postname.html/?cat=5
rather then go straight to the category like this
http://?cat=5
this is a big problem because the user gets stuck with the single post article (http://url/postname.html or http://url/postname.html/?cat=5) and can’t get out of it unless they click home…then it goes back to http://url
anybody can help clear this up with the permalink not rendering categories correctly?
Nevermind I solved it – it was my bad. The links for the categories had href=”?cat=2″ rather than “http://url/?cat=2” …after changing the links works fine now. Thanks!
