   I was just wondering if there's a way to edit the plug-in code so when the slides change, the page urls don't also change to "#1...#2...#3" etc.

   There's a checkbox option for "Update URL with slide numbers". Just deselect that and the hashed URLs will go away.

   It's not there...

   I'm using wordpress 2.9.2 and 0.5.0 of the portfolio slideshow. do I need to update and to which version of the plugin for 2.9.2wp?

   You'll need to update, yeah. I think the newest version will work with 2.9.2, but I haven't tested so I can't say for sure.
