I've released beta 3 of the Popularity Contest plugin:

    http://www.alexking.org/blog/2005/05/27/popularity-contest/

I'm opening a new thread here as the last one has gotten a bit long and unweildy and most of the problems mentioned there have already been fixed.

If you are seeing any problems with this release, please include the following information in your report:

    • Version of WordPress you are using
    • Theme you are using
    • A list of all active plugins you are using

Using version 1.5 with a huge amount of plugins [on display at http://shadows.os42.com/index.php/areas/ and your plugin is working now. It is showing popularity and percentage on each post. The sidebar is also producing a list of the most popular.

    A few issues though.
    1. The Popularity plugin would not work properly until I deactivated the The Referraliser plugin @ http://nfo.zackdesign.biz/archives/plugins/395

    2. I then noticed that when writing a post, the preview option at the bottom of a post now produces this error - You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ')' at line 3

    3. Consequently, I then tried to deactivate the Popularity plugin but this produced a result of no posts showing in main content. Sidebar and header still working as normal.

Apart from these issues, I really like the plugin. Could you advise though, as to how to apply styling to the produced Poularity % in the posts...

    Hope this all makes sense..

elyonline and shadow - are you using beta 3?

shadow - I can add a class for styling.

I found and fixed the issue where only one post would show after activating the plugin. This could happen if you had a foreach loop for your posts rather than a while loop. I've worked around that for the next release (don't do a foreach through the global $posts in your plugins people).

    Thanks Alex :)

Reinstalled beta 3 and have added styling.

    All looks good so far.

Could my double-loop set up explain why I don't register hits for home page views?

OK I see why I am getting the 404.

The URL to the updated values is : http://www.domain.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=popularity-contest.php&updated=true

    but it should be: http://www.domain.com/news/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=popularity-contest.php&updated=true

My WP is in a folder called 'news'

    Thanks

    Arlo - no idea.

elyonline - What is the value for WordPress address in your Options?

Not too sure what you mean Alex. This is the options URL: http://www.domain.com/news/wp-admin/options-general.php

    Update:
Hmmm I have just been checking stats and it looks that the plugin don't seem to be registering clicks now.

They have stayed the same for 2 days (since I used the new beta 3). I checked AW stats though my hosting and that tells me a different story. Certain posts have had like 30 hits but unregistered in the plugin.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

I have just noticed another bug when using the popular posts sidebar. It shows drafts.

I had a couple of posts I decided to take down for a while so I saved them as drafts but they still show up in the sidebar and if you click them you can still read them even if they are in draft mode.

    Thanks

Hi, great plugin. I tried to change my values in the popularity contest options are, but I get a message "No input file specified." I'm using the latest WordPress and plugin. Dos anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

    thanks.

    Excellent plugin, thanks!

The summary page shows "unranked" for yet-to-be-published posts, and "0%" for as-yet-unpublished drafts. I'd prefer it to not show either, but it's not a big problem.

I'm on WP 1.5 with popularity contest 1 beta 3.

elyonline: strange that. If I mark a post "draft", and click on the link in the popularity scores, I get a "Sorry, no posts matched your criteria."

Hetta: Hmmmm strange if you go to http://www.elyonline.co.uk/ and scroll down the side bar you will see my 'Most popular post' and click on 'The Evoloution Of The Crazy Frog' that is a draft but shows on sidebar and also links to it.

    Thanks

    Hi Alex,

    Thanks for the update.

    Still get the admin 404.

I still have major proplems because it hasn't registered any clicks for a few days now.

It may be conflicting with Event Calender - http://blog.firetree.net/2005/05/27/eventcalandar23 thats the only plugin I have added recently.

Any ideas why this would be?

It appears the sections, Post, Cat, Arch, Home, Feed, Ping, Track do not update although comments do.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Alex - is there a way to put a tag in the loop that displays the views of the post, rather than the popularity %?

elyonline - I'm sorry, I have no idea what is going on for you. Since other people don't seem to have having the same problems and I don't see them, I'm guessing it has something to do with your specific site configuration.

Arlo - sure, feel free to use whatever data you like, just add a hookable function into the code.

I think I can work out adding the hook, but what function would I call that pulls a post's view count? Or do I have to add one?

  21. Alex King

If there isn't a function for the specific data you want, you'll need to add one.

    Alex.

Ok thanks anyway, but I can confirm that if I de-activate the plug-ins 'WP-Stats' and 'Event Calender' you plug-in works.

    Why would that be?

    Thanks

Just wanna say thanks for your plugin Alex, and leave a suggestion: include an easy way to replace "Popularity: 80%" with a picture/graphic or .gif for a nicer layout (maybe using the str_replace)

    Cheers

Anyone having issues with the update of values looking in the wrong place has this plugin in the directory that the zip creates; the way Alex wrote the plugin, it expects it to be in wp-content/plugins/, not a subdirectory underneath that.

Now, mind you, I prefer my plugins to be in their own directories, and I'd like that to be the standard way to do things, but ...

    Alex,

Just a quick question, is it possibile to list the most popular categories in addition to the most popular posts? I could see this being quite handy for those folks that have a truckload of categories and want to direct their users to the cats that get the most traffic.

It's certainly possible (it is shown on the report page) - but I don't have a "template tag" for that. I bet it would be easy to add.

    Hi Alex, 2 questions:
first I want to say: it's great plugin.
    And my questions:
1)why there is nothing in admin/options/popularity?
Is it ok?i can see my stats in admin/dashboard/most popular posts.
    2) i've implemented flash for showing popularity of top 10 posts, i add new function into your plugin(hope, that this is not problem, but I dont know how to find total percentage of popularity, i just know single views for post, as it on my blog: http://blog.franto.com
Can you tell me how i can find it out?

I have already fond out solution for percentage (but it differs 1% :) ) but i have copy it from other function where is computed through ceil function, so i do not know, why it differs.

"I bet it would be easy to add."... lol... It's all relative... I'll take a peek and see what I can come up with...

My "Category Views" and "Archive Views" aren't being incremented... Here's a link for one of my categories. Do you think the problem may reside in the template I'm using?...
