I know I've seen this brought up on one of the trac items, but in IE7/8 there is no way to close the pointers. I don't recall any solution/attention being posted.
The close button is just plain text in these browsers. I know I know...upgrade. But it's not an option at work, I'm stuck with what I'm given. It's where I do all my work.
I can obviously just disable the things.... just wanted to see if a fix is coming.
**I use the admin dropdown menu.... so the pointers cover up half of my menu items being stuck there like that
Cool, nothing has changed on the nightly download for me (as of 5 minutes ago).... but I'm not sure when stuff changed in trunk goes to the nightly release....
I dunno how that stuff works exactly! :)
EDIT- Just noticed Beta 1 was out..... pointers still won't close. But maybe the above edits happened after Beta 1?

The change Alex talks about was committed just before Beta 1 was tagged! I'd like to think it was maybe browser specific, but saying that, I've not had any problems with them on IE9.
OK, I'm runnin the Beta1 as of 2 hours ago, and my pointers are not closeable on IE7/8. I know the browsers are outdated, but since WP hasn't discontinued support, I would think they should function.
I've actually run into a few PITA issues I've documented on my site http://vudu.me/2os
As well as here on the forums
I had that problem before, Rev, and I thought we'd fixed it...
Oh yes, https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18693#comment:18 there's my comment. Updated the ticket to mention it's still there.
Thanks for updating the trac.... I had commented there before, but keep forgetting about it
Sweet, all 4 tickets I raised are fixed!
