I'm using WordPress 1.5.2 and having some trouble with the plugins. I've installed a few plugins successfully, but now I'm having trouble with two of them:

    http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/Userextra
    http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/Usermeta

I put the files in the plugins folder, but they don't show up for activation in my plugins control panel. I've even tried inject the usermeta.php into my browser address bar, but that gives the error 'Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.', which I tried to circumvent with IE as instructed but failed...

Here's the plugin directory, and the plugins are not reflectred in the control panel:

    Any ideas?

From viewing the attachments on the plugin pages you've linked, it seems that the plugin is lacking the closing php tag.
Add the following after the last line for both files:
    ?>
