    Hi,

After downloading, extracting files then ftp(ing) plugins to my site's plugin folder they do not appear in Plugin Management area of my blog.

Have checked developers' sites for any special installation instructions, etc. Still no success.

Am able to upload themes no problem.

    Totally bewildered.

    Please help.

.. and you have made sure that you are not ending up with uploads that looks like this:

    /wp-content/plugins/SOME-PLUGIN-NAME/SOME-PLUGIN-NAME/ .. files ?

    In other words, nested directories?

    No, I've checked that. Thanks.

Further explanation - Checked my site's File Manager and the plugins I have uploaded are there in own folders. When I go to Plugin Management area of blog, they are not there (?)

    Hope this makes it clearer.

It's a new blog I'm just getting together, but this has stopped me in tracks.

    http://relationshiproadblocks.com
    "all-in-one-seo"/"contact form akismet"/"akismet" latest download./"google sitemaps"
    Host - Hostgator

There are a couple of other plugins that got through (don't ask me how)
    Thanks.

Apparantly you didnt understand my question earlier, as I was spot on with my diagnosis.

    This:

    http://relationshiproadblocks.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-contactform-akismet-1.1/wp-contactform-akismet/

is exactly what I was talking about above.

    Thats nested. Thats wrong.

    http://relationshiproadblocks.com/wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments/subscribe-to-comments/

    Thats nested. Thats wrong.

    http://relationshiproadblocks.com/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator.3.0.3/google-sitemap-generator/

    Thats nested. Thats wrong.

Thank-you for figuring out the problem. I don't know how I managed to "nest" directories. Suppose I'll just have to work on my understanding of WP.

Your help is much appreciated. I owe you one, buddy!

Perhaps you can add me to your list of "idiots" ;)

No worries, youre not the first, and wont be the last -- this is the singular most common problem seen with plugins not being seen.

And precisely why I asked where your blog was after you assured me that it wasn't the case :)

I don't understand how I did it. Can you tell me how, so I don't do it again? Or, point me towards info. that I can learn from?

you probably just uploaded what you unzipped. Some apps that unpack archives (winzip, winrar, etc..) unpack files to a directory that corresponds to the name of the zip file.

But isn't that what your supposed to do? Unzip then upload the unpacked files? Or am I showing my "idiocy" again?

Yes unzip then verify the structure then upload.

Just as I pressed the "send" button, I remembered that -the verifying part!

Thanks guys, your help has really been appreciated.

    Hi,

Allow me to piggyback on this conversation. I am having similar problems with my plugin. I was following the feedback up until the following comment from Jeremy:

"Yes unzip then verify the structure then upload."

I don't understand how to 'verify the structure'.

Can someone help me? The plugin I wish to upload (unblockable popup) has multiple folders and many files.

    My site is http://www.choosetoevolve.com

I am having the same or similar problem. If I unzip the plugin do I need to upload every file within it separately to WP/ Or is there some way to do them all at once. Thanks

    Hey Everyone!

I just figured this out and had to share! I couldn't figure it out either, since I downloaded the entire plugin of YAPB and it worked. Now why wouldn't any other plugin work the same way?

Don't upload the entire file, or it won't work. Take each file from your plugin and upload via your cpanel or FTP. You don't need to upload the readme txt file. I just got Stats and Subscribe plugins to comments to work by doing this. And believe me, I have sat here for a few hours trying to figure out if it's a problem with the WinZip program, or possibly something else. So no, you're NOT stupid everyone!

I don't know how to upload batches of files. But if I figure it out, I'll let you know. Or maybe one of the nice WP people will let us know. E

Nah. Those nice WP people are sick of explaining things, and so instead they are busily making ways for WordPress to install plugins itself, directly.

WordPress 2.5 will include automatic plugin upgrade functionality. Work is being done on automatic plugin install functionality too, but I don't know if it will be in 2.5 initially. Maybe later.

Note that this automatic stuff will only work with plugins listed here on WordPress.org, I believe.
