Plugins and Themes on WordPress.org, are they tested? (5 posts)

    Hi Everyone,

All all plugins posted on the extend section of this website tested and reliable? I know there are ratings but are they screened before getting listed? How do we know which ones to trust and which ones to avoid?

  2. The themes have an *extensive* checklist.

The plugins do get glanced at and anything obvious gets caught.

Anything here on wp.org, you can trust.

As far as "trusting" plugins not to include malware, shady backlinks, etc., you can almost completely trust any plugins found on wp.org (those types of things would violate the terms of hosting plugins on wp.org, and would result in the plugin being removed from the site). That said, there are two things of which you should be aware when it comes to plugins:

    1. There will be bugs and issues in a lot of the plugins (I have yet to use any software that didn't have at least a handful of bugs), but the "last updated" dates are generally a pretty good indication of how active the developer is, and you can usually get decent response from the more active developers. Most of the developers will appreciate it if you report a bug, as it makes it possible for them to improve their work.
    2. Older plugins may not be compatible with newer versions of WordPress. Many of the plugins will have information about which versions they're compatible with. Even if a plugin does not say it's compatible with your version, you are free to install it and try it out, but it may either not work, or cause an error in your WordPress installation. Removing the offending plugin is easy, though (just FTP into your site and delete the plugin folder). Additionally, WordPress has checks built in so that it will rarely even allow a broken plugin to be activated.
  4. Alas, you CAN NOT trust all plugins on WP.org, as people only review them with cause. So there is always a chance of someone being evil. They certainly are safER, but there's always a chance.

    Mostly trustworthy :)
