I was very impressed with ZotPress — in fact I still am. What a beautifully designed interface. However, some of the initial excitement died down when I found that it will only display items from libraries that I have made public. That is confusing and seems unnecessary. The Zotero Feeds/API Settings allow me to create private keys in which I specify what groups can be accessed with that key and how they may be accessed (read only or read/write). This is independent of the private/public status of the groups.

This leads to the natural expectation that ZotPress, when fed the right private key, would be able to display (“read”) citations from a group for which I enabled “read” access, even if the status of the group on zotero.org is private. Yet I find ZotPress doesn’t want to display stuff in such cases.

Surely this would be most helpful. One great thing about ZotPress could be that you don’t have to open up your private group to the whole wide world in order to be able to display selected references from it. If that is not possible I don’t see the point of being able to create private keys for such groups.

Is this a technical impossibility or could ZotPress be made to do what I need?

Just in case this is a Zotero issue, here’s a thread I started on the Zotero forums.

From that thread, it is now clear that there is no problem in principle with getting access to items from private groups, given the right private key. So it seems to be a current limitation of ZotPress that should be relatively easy to fix. I hope 🙂

    Hey Mark,

Checked out your post on the Zotero forums first. Do I say public in the FAQ? Oops. Well, you’re right, and private Zotero groups should work just fine with the proper key. Have you tried adding the private account with the key? I’m setting the API URL like the commenter in the other post wrote. I think it should work? Let me know if otherwise.

Yup, it does say public in the FAQ.

Private groups don’t work with the proper key for me. I have added the private account, but no collections, tags or items are displayed.

Okay, I set up my own private group, with group type set to private and library reading set to “any group member”, and created a private key with the setting “Allow third party access” checked (and everything else unchecked or set to “None”). This is working perfectly on my end.

What settings are you using for your group and private key?

Reposting from a Zotero forum on this: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/18918 so Katie might see it…

Have more or less the same issue. the https://api.zotero.org/groups/<groupID>/items?key=<key> works fine, but I’m not getting anything in Zotpress – even for the cache. [zotpress] doesn’t return anything but an error. The group has been set as private and public. I’ve even checked cURL. Is there any clear documentation on using private groups with Zotpress? It’d be really useful.
Alternatively, I’m not sure if WordPress might be to blame – it’s a multi-site / network set up. That might be the issue…

This is all very mysterious. I can’t imagine why WPMU would be an issue. Would one or more of you be comfortable with contacting me privately with a link to your private Zotero library and the Zotpress shortcode/s you’re using? I think I’ll have to diagnose on a case-by-case basis.
