This week Hostgator suspended my site because I had 50,000 requests per hr. After deactivating YARPP the load went way down. Is there any way of using the plugin but avoiding this enormous strain on resources?

Congratulations on your popular site! There are tips on less computationally intensive settings on the YARPP FAQ page.
The bottom line, though, is that the YARPP algorithm which gives you those good results comes with a certain computational cost. If that's something you value, you may want to move up to a higher hosting level or another hosting company.
