Recently I had moved to VPS on godaddy, due to performance issues in shared hosting. Configured everything and also optimized a bit to bring down average load on Server to 0.4-0.5. I installed Super Cache yesterday to handle high traffic during peak hours. But after 24 hrs Im seeing my server coming to a standstill and pages timing out, had around 13,000 files in cache. Promply deactivated caching and seemed to improve performance, and after a server restart, things are back to normal and much faster.

The VPS has 2 GB RAM and CPU load is just 0.7 max. Is the large number of cache files normal?

Are you using legacy mode caching? If you're using mod_rewrite or PHP caching then is your permalink structure flat? ie. /%postname%/ ?

Your server should be able to handle that number of files if you use mod_rewrite or PHP caching and your permalink structure isn't flat so the cached files are broken up into directories.

Regardless, preload less pages if you're using that, or reduce the expiry time so you reduce the number of files.
