Hi, the .htaccess rules on this page are not formatted correctly and will break your site if simply sut/pasted.

Also, in the readme, the .htaccess rules have backtick characters that will break your site if cut/pasted.

The backticks are there so the text is formatted on the wordpress.org plugin repository.
Similar to here, a backtick is an marker for the beginning and ending of code.

Thanks Ron. Yes, I figured that part out. But, the problem is that the htaccess rules are not showing up properly on wordpress.org! In any event, if you cut/paste from either the readme or wordpress.org, you'll break your site. :)
The rules are repeated in the admin page too, and they're customised for your install. The rules in the readme.txt are generic and may not be suitable for your install. They're only an example of what they look like.
