Going back to 1.0 and then back again to 1.1 seems to have solved the problem. Now only front page and subsequent post listings change with new comments, while individual posts or pages stay as they are (and as they should).
Further elaborating, for future use and for helping others, it might be related to APC caching PHP constants and thus creating confusion when updating stuff.
Users on their own server using APC should just restart apache2 before cooking the noodle too much.
