Use this script: %%wppa%% %%photo=#potd%% (optional: %%size=..%% %%align=..%%) You may have more than one on a page, they all are different.
Is it possible to set the album for #potd within the shortcode / script?
eg. %%wppa%% %%album=album1%% %%photo=#potd%%
or can #potd only get the album from the potd setup page? I should probably just try it. Worst that could happen is I have to revert. 🙂

What do you expect to see in your suggested script?
What I was hoping for was to be able to call wppa in a shortcode or script or widget and in different locations specify different albums to use depending on where. Like, on my about page a photo from the “back in the day” album, while on my home page my most recent photos, etc. I want to display one photo at a time that changes to keep the site dynamic. It would be even better if I could make 2 or more calls on the same page that would place photos from different albums.
