I'd like to request the feature to have the footnotes collapsable (and an option in the admin area to have them "open" or "closed" by default.
The fd-footnotes plugin has this feature and I am sure it would be easy for someone to "port" the feature over, I just am not adept enough at code work to do it!
I find this plugin easier to use than the fd-footnotes one, but I do miss the collapsable list feature.

Although I haven't used it, I'm going to say the Adjustly Collapse plugin linked above looks like a good solution for this.
This feature is unlikely to be added soon, unless someone wants to contribute the code.
