I used a blank page. I even put in {event_url} in the page and I get http://novirecycle.elighthouse.us/events?event=-1 on the page or nothing depending on what I do.

you're doing wrong i think. the {event_url} tag does only make sence in a list of event.
to get a list of events displayed use tags like {events_print} or {events_printlist}. to show a graphical calendar use {events_calendar}.
