WordPress SEO by Yoast
Yoast not creating News sitemaps as expected (2 posts)

I have a site that was migrated a week ago from Movable Type 4 to WordPress and ever since then, the posts are not getting indexed into Google News (this site has been indexed by Google News for so long now before this, that they are grandfathered into a special permalink structure that doesn't require the use of numerics). We used the same meta key that we used on MT4 and we did not change the domain name in the migration. We did, obviously, change to pointer to our multi-site WP installation on a new server.

We are using the current Yoast plugin for all of our sites on the new WP server. Another site that was migrated shortly before this one is being successfully scooped up by Google. I removed any static sitemap files that might have been kicking around (I did that yesterday) since the one site that is working and being indexed in Google news has no static sitemaps. It just relies on Yoast to dynamically generate the sitemap. Which, if you follow my links below, it doesn't show any evidence of actually doing. For either site. Yet, one is getting into News and the other isn't. It's extremely perplexing.

This one works and is indexed by Google News

This one doesn't work and isn't indexed, but it used to be when it was in Movable Type.

Anyway ideas on what I can try next?

There are multiple problems with the Google News XML Sitemap module, including these:

I would add to these that adding stock tickers doesn't push them to the sitemap.

In short, it appears Yoast hasn't attended to the Google-News-Sitemap module for months, yet the main SEO plugin has been updated multiple times in this period (and at first blush it appears as though plugin updates have broken the module). Too bad, because in its initial incarnation the module was great - I can only hope that Yoast turns his attention back to it.

Wish I had a suitable replacement to recommend to you, but so far none of the news sitemap plugins I've found have much in the way of functionality.

Having said all of this a note that the presence or absence of a news sitemap shouldn't influence whether or not your posts appear in Google News, but only the speed with which they appear. If your site was previously Google News indexed and has now disappeared it may be that your site structure has changed. See the section "Changes to your site" here:
