Hide WordPress Generator removes version only (7 posts)

    The title explains it all. After checking "Hide WordPress Generator", view source still shows:
    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress" />
    Can the generator metatag be removed completely using this plugin?

    Just add the line below to your functions.php file and you wont need to check that box at all.

    remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator');

    I know I can do it manually. That's what I've done in the past.

    The point is that the plugin is supposed to "Hide WordPress Generator" but it doesn't. The generator remains; the plugin only removes the version number.

    I've decided to go back to All-in-One SEO Pack and manually remove the generator as you suggested, at least until WordPress SEO matures beyond a 1.0 release.

    To anyone that wishes to do your site harm it's clear that the site is built with WordPress anyway. The important thing is hiding the version number. Though if you keep you installation up to date even this isn't so important.

    I wouldn't of thought it was a reason to go back to AIOSEO if you've already made the transition. And it can be done manually in the meantime anyway.

    AIOSEO has it's own issues. Though I'm not sure these still apply. See http://foliovision.com/2009/10/14/wordpress-all-in-one-seo-plugin/ and http://foliovision.com/seo-tools/wordpress/plugins/fv-all-in-one-seo-pack/.

    I switched from AIOSEO to FV Simpler SEO over a year ago and it's been working great (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/fv-all-in-one-seo-pack/).

    WordPress SEO is the plugin for me now though for sure. It has everything. I've removed 5 plugins and just use this one now. It does it all.

    Rob, may I ask which 5 plugins you replaced with WordPress SEO?

    Of course!

    The 5 were, the SEO plugin I was using before, FV Simpler SEO. And then...
    Yoast's own Robots Meta and RSS Footer plugins.
    Arne Brachhold's Google XML Sitemaps plugin.
    And the WP No Category Base plugin.

    All great plugins in their own right. But now I can do it all with one.

    Thanks for the info, Rob. I'll give WordPress SEO another go on a different website.
    If the current behavior of leaving the generator metatag is kept, I think the label "Hide WordPress Generator" should be renamed to "Hide WordPress Version Number". But ideally, I wish the generator metatag would disappear completely. Security through obfuscation, ya know.
