   Hello,
   i got an issue with empty description in some posts.
   Here are some exemples of what is set in the excerpt field
   'ààààààà à' => description is empty
   'ààààààààà' => description contains the excerpt
   'ààààààà_à' => description contains the excerpt
   'ééééééé é' => description contains the excerpt

   Is there an issue with some special chars and space character ?

   Issue seems to be solved by using 'u' flag in
   $string = preg_replace( '/\s\s+/u',' ', $string );
   in function wpseo_replace_vars()
   in the file wpseo-functions.php

   If I do that modification, I get no description tag at all.
   Do you have any suggestions?

   Are you using UTF-8 ? the last u is a modifier only for UTF-8
