Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.
This doesn't work. after the 1.2.8.1 update
it every category shows 404 now. Can you help?
sigh I shouldn't have updated.

I've got the same problem :(
Hope a fix is on the way
Somehow in my dashboard:
settings>permalinks
my general settings was changed. it said: /page/%category%/%postname%/
instead of only: /%category%/%postname%/
I removed /page
and the website was back to normal.
Hope this helps...
Unfortunately it didn't sort it out :( .
Try unchecking the 'strip catergory' box, then ticking it and saving again.
forcing the category to be included fixed my issue : http://www.seo-saijogeorge.com.au/how-to-fix-404-categories-tag-xml-sitemap-in-wordpress-seo-by-yoast/
can you help remove blog slug infront of category name???
found a solution.
so basically, If you are using a multisite, don't use "category strip" from Yoast. It just gives you a headache.
1.check off "category strip"
2. go to permalinks, and update as this blog says
http://praveenlobo.com/techblog/how-to-remove-the-blog-slug-from-the-permalinksurl-in-wordpress-multisite-installation-without-a-plugin/
3. download http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/no-category-base-wpml/
4. activate the plugin and you will live in peace.
