I couldnt help but notice the similarities in the file names that are used by this free plugin and the one of a very similar name that wpmudev sell for $39 per month. I really think that $39 per month is a hell of a steep price for such a plugin, especially when you can get it for free.
While this seems to be legal according to the license, it is not really a very good practice. I just thought you may want to know about this, if you were not already aware.

    http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/domain-mapping/

In the wpmudev version, it even states within the coding "This program is free software" even though you will have just paid $39 per month for it.
It then goes on to state "Based on an original by Donncha". I suppose that depends how you define "based on" as it seems to be the exact same plugin with some updates and changes added. I would have thought a more accurate term would have been "forked from" as "based on" makes it sound like they only took the idea from you instead of the entire plugin prior to adding modifications.

WPMUDEV has had 12,806 downloads of this plugin. As the smallest single payment that can possibly be made for this plugin on their site is $39 and assuming that everyone cancelled their account after the first payment, which I am sure they did not, that means that WPMUDEV has made a bare minimum of $499'434. Almost half a million dollars!

Have you received any payments from WPMUDEV as a thank you for the initial work that you put into the plugin that they then took and made all this money off?

Hardly seems ethical unless you are part of the team who helped them program it.

Hello, just to chime in here.

I'm a member of WMPUDev and I pay, however.

Their modifications have to do with how it supports the levels in their other plugins. They have over 140+ plugins, and the $39/month is for the support. Everytime I've ever had a question, they have responded within 8 hours or less.

If I have a problem, they help me through it, even if it's writing a patch to fix it.

Their plugins are all based off of their production site edublogs.com, which has made much more than wpmudev.

Really, I think it's just a clever way for them to pay a small staff of developers to help paying members while at the same time their members are rooting out possible bugs on all their new plugins etc. Since they eat their own dog food, this strengthens their own site.

I looked over their plugin and actually I chose Donncha's version because his version has an extra feature to handle cross domain cookie handling (and wpmudev's did not) However, theirs intergrates into their pro-sites plugin, as I stated.

So for example, if I was selling blogs on a wordpress MU platform, I could charge a $5 upgrade via paypal to enable domain mapping. Also handles refunds.

So yeah, it's 99% the same, but it's also their own flavor of it.
I hope they've (and a lot of other people) have thrown some donations to donncha, wpmuguru and the other guys that have helped out.

I think overall wpmu has something good to offer. I've been a member for 6 months, and they update their plugins often when there's a wordpress upgrade or new security flaw etc. Here, I kinda feel bad pestering these guys for help. I might let them know there's an issue, but I know I can't rely on them to drop everything and help me out. I'm sure they have lives too.

    ^^Just so your informed^^

Donncha, keep up the good work!

I would like to quote Donncha himself from this WordPress.org topic:

That one does more but will cost you either $79 or $400 or so, including support and other plugins. It uses the same basic idea as there's only one way of implementing this.

Don't need to say anything else...

@Jason, thanks for the vote of faith in DEV

Honestly, this guy just likes to be grumpy and will toot his grumpy horn anywhere he can.

Best to just leave it be cause there is no talking to folks like that. His gripe is not about Donncha nor is his aim to get Donncha recognized, which I think is sad considering the great work he has done! What a shame to use Donncha in this smear campaign. :( His aim is to smear WPMU DEV wherever he can, he has even done it on WPMU DEV as well.

I say let him talk, complaining apparently makes him feel better. He's probably busy penning a 5 paragraph retort as we speak. No one can make this guy happy or talk reason to him.

@Gina, if only it were that simple :(

We both know it won't matter to him, his aim is not to honor Donncha.

Just like Dr. Martin Cooper inventing mobile phone, and a lot other companies adding new features.

@Gina : Nice share, I hope that would make him realize.

@Jason : Thanks for the nice words dear.

    Hi,

I am a happy client of WPMU DEV and am using their version of WordPress MU Domain Mapping due to the fact that it works with their Pro Sites plugin.

HOWEVER I would love have the extra feature to handle cross domain cookie handling from this free version implemented into the WPMU DEV anyone that can help??

    Many Thanks,
    TF28

Hello, I know it is perfectly legal, I just found it a bit odd that most of the plugins I used from WPMUDEV seem to have came from elsewhere.
All I wondered was if the initial developer had been given some form of thanks for the work that they had done with this plugin.

I have been a WPMUDEV member and I was not happy with their service. However, I was very happy with their plugins and how the service started.

I was not attempting in any way to point fingers or smear WPMUDEV and I do not think I did with the initial post. I was simply making a point.

@Gina B I understand what you have quoted, but that does not mean that you use identical code does it? If there is only one way to implement something, you simply implement it that way instead of taking someone elses code to do the job. However, under the license, that is perfectly legal and above board.

    @Jason You said

I hope they've (and a lot of other people) have thrown some donations to donncha, wpmuguru and the other guys that have helped out.

I absolutely agree and that was why I mentioned it in this thread. That was my only concern and the sole reason for opening this thread. I was not aware if the developer knew that their work had been used.

You are a support member of WPMUDEV. You will know that I did complain as it was taking 3+ days to get a reply and the person who took control of the issue decided to refuse to talk to me at all. My points were valid and other users backed me up on this. My subscription was cancelled before it was due to expire by WPMUDEV members of staff.
HOWEVER, that is not why I opened this ticket. I opened it to ask a question and see if the dev was aware.
I have not mentioned anything negative about you or WPMUDEV and I would appreciate it if you refrained from talking about me in a negative light.

I simply wanted to make a very basic point, but it would seem that this has turned into a lot more without any input from me.
Unfortunately, WPMUDEV staff have shown in this ticket, the exact reason why I opened a complaint with them in the first place. I had not intended to mention the negative experience I had with WPMUDEV but based on your attack against my character, I was forced to. I do not wish to talk about WPMUDEV any further as I fail to see any point. However, I would also expect that WPMUDEV staff refrain from trying to negatively talk about me as a customer. Is this really the way you address a customer?

I know you say that you said "That was my only concern and the sole reason for opening this thread." was to make the developer aware.

That's throwing wpmudev under the bus isn't it?

I mean, you ARE painting them in a bad light, by misrepresenting them. That backfires, and makes YOU look bad. I'm not trying to dog you, I'm just saying that by using very specific wording, you are saying that they are charging $39 / month for his plugin. <- That is a false statement.

If they were selling this on Evato for $39 THAT would be accurate.

12,806 downloads of this plugin.... bare minimum of $500,000

I downloaded it about 3 dozen times, and so has everyone else every time there is a fix or update.

I won't speak about your character friend, as I don't know you.
Are they(WPMUDev) perfect? Who is? I think they try to do a good job.

Could you have been screwed by them? Totally Possible. Maybe, I wasn't there, but I don't see any evidence of them making a regular practice out of it. I've seen repeatedly over and over in their support that's super active with usually several staff chiming in and pinging the right people to help when they can.

This post you made is a troll post, otherwise you wouldn't have brought their name out publicly, you would have contacted the dev directly, and many other ways to handle it. Even if you didn't intend it to be, that's what it is. Have a nice day ;D

It is legal to both modify and sell GPL code as long as the license is respected. If Donncha has a problem with it, he can deal with it. There's no need for this kind of thread here.

This is a support forum. Let's please keep it that way.
