• Hi,

    I ust installed the mobile pack plugin to my page (http://www.fabiancsalad.hu) but I really don’t know how to set up the http://m.fabiancsalad.hu subdomain for mobile view.

    I’ve created the m. subdomain in Helm but if I call m.fabiancsalad.hu I get ‘Access denied” message.

    Can anybody help me with a step by step detailed setup?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Fabrik74,
    are you sure you want to use two separate domains? Not that you shouldn’t, but of course it is more complicated. WPMP will work also on a single domain.

    In short there are a number of things you should do:
    1. configure your domain in your DNS (and I assume that is what you did, sorry, I don’t know what Helm is).
    2. configure your Web server to serve content to requests for your m. domain. If you have Apache there are a couple of ways of doing it, but the most common is via Named Virtual hosts. I suggest you check on Apache.
    2a. configure Apache to serve requests for m. with the same directory as your wordpress site
    3. configure WPMP to also use the m. domain (something I assume you have already done).

    On the other hand, if you want to go for the easy way, just tell WPMP you have 1 single domain and it will take care of detecting mobiles and serving the right content.

    Helm is a webhosting control system (IIS). And unfortunately I don’t know how to set the m. to serve in the same directory as my worpress site.

    If I create the m. sub domain, an m folder is also created.

    the %Mobile site seems to assume that m.yoursite.com is a mobile site vs. yoursite.com which is a desktop site. I have cPanel and set up a subdomain ‘m’ with public_html as it’s document root. Then I set it up to redirect to http://yoursite.com/?wpmp_switcher=mobile

    However, going there from the desktop just goes to the regular page, not a mobile page.

    %Mobile wants a URL for the MOBILE SITE. All there is here is a querystring argument that detects and switches appropriately, but %Mobile won’t accept the querystring.

    How can you get a URL that goes to the mobile version no matter what?

    Some people use a folder like ‘yoursite.com/mobile’.

    Also, what if you want different content on the mobile site than the desktop site. Do you need separate installations of WordPress?

    Thanks

    Hello,

    Has anyone figured this out? I’m using the WPMP plugin.

    I first set up m.mydomain.com as a CNAME to mydomain.com and the entire site shows up in mobile version

    I’m just setting this up for clients at the moment, so here is my two cent’s worth 🙂

    OPTION 1
    ========

    If you want your main website to ALSO be your mobile website, install the plugin in your main WP site. Tweak the settings, and then whenever someone lands on your website, the plugin will AUTO-DETECT whether they’re on a computer, a cellphone or an ipad-type hand-held device.

    This option means all your content is available to all types of visitors. View the screenshots to see what mobile sites look like via the plugin:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mobile-pack/screenshots/

    In the screenshots, you can see a setting for Desktop Domains – use this is you have a separate mobile website, and want to tell it which one is the ‘main’ larger website.

    ========
    OPTION 2
    ========

    If you would like to have a smaller version of your website for your MOBILE WEBSITE:
    — create a new sub-domain “m” which becomes m.yourwebsitename.com
    — alternatively, create sub-directory “mobile” or “m” which becomes yourwebsitename.com/m/ or yourwebsitename.com/mobile/
    — in this folder, install wordpress and WordPress Mobile Pack (edit settings as required – specify Desktop Domain as your OTHER larger website)
    — create only those pages you wish to show your mobile visitors.

    Why would anyone do this?

    There are lots of reasons, but here are a couple:
    — don’t have access to main website
    — want to push specific info to mobile-only viewers and subscribers (create a new autoresponder & sign up for them)
    — prefer to have a fast-loading, simple 5 page site for mobile viewers
    — have a specific campaign you wish to keep separate from main site

    Hope this makes sense!
    Cheers

    PS The software will provide a link on the mobile website for viewers to return to the Main website.
