WordPress Backup to Dropbox
[resolved] Nothing seems to happen when backing up (32 posts)

    Hello,

    Great idea and sounding product.

I've tried scheduling a backup and doing a 'on demand' backup after successfully linking my DropBox account. However, nothing seems to ever happen (tried numerous times). Is there a log somewhere I can see what is (or is not) happening?

I might be experiencing the same problem.

I installed the plugin (version 0.9.4) and successfully linked the Dropbox account.
When I click the Start Backup button under Backup Now I get the following message:

Your backup has been scheduled and is waiting for WordPress to start it. This could take a few minutes, so now is a good time to go and grab a cup of coffee.

However nothing seems to happen, even after an hour no files are visible in Dropbox.

The plugin What's in Cron tells me this:

    Apr 11, 2012 @ 9:11 (1334135482) One-off event execute_instant_drobox_backup
    Apr 13, 2012 @ 2:00 (1334282400) Once Daily execute_periodic_drobox_backup

I started a manual backup (using Backup Now) yesterday at 9:11 UTC, which is visible in the Cron list, but it didn't result in any backuping being done. The nightly/daily backup at 2:00 also didn't run.
A new Cron for tonight (it is currently Apr 12, 2012) is planned, but a new manual backup I started about 30 minutes ago is not visible.

Can you please verify that your cron system is working by creating a scheduled post.

Seems it doesn't, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I have another site running on the same server where the problem doesn't occur, the backup runs just fine there.

So it must be someting with the WordPress Cron system on the 'trouble giving' site.

Thanks for your response, if you have any more pointers where to look I will truly appreciate it.

Please check you do not have DISABLE_WP_CRON set to true in your wp-config.php

Failing that, I am not sure a some blogs have issues with WordPress' in built cron system and I dont know why.

Checked wp-config.php but it didn't have DISABLE_WP_CRON set to true.

The problem seemed to be that the site runs behind .htaccess, therefor wp-cron.php is unreachable for WordPress and thus Cron jobs aren't executed.

I solved this by adding the following acception to my .htaccess file:

    <Files "wp-cron.php">
    Allow from All
    Satisfy Any
    </Files>

For future reference and other users having similar issues I posted this, so their debugging might go faster.

This is a fantastic find and will probably solve wp-cron issues for many people.

Thanks for taking the time to get to the bottom it! I will be linking this tread to the plugin read me.

Hi im using dropbox plugin for backups, i love the idea, and it makes more sense than backup on your own server for many reasons we all know.

Anyways i have setup with all the instructions you advised as well as attended to all the hints in this forum. however i cannot get the backup initiated. here is my error:

Backup error on 2012-05-08 at 08:47:45: Exception - Error creating sql dump file. (ERROR_2)
Backup warning on 2012-05-08 at 08:47:44: This php installation is running in safe mode so the time limit cannot be set. Click here for more information.

It looks like the plugin is having issues writing to the 'backups' directory. Please insure it has write permissions.

Regarding donations, Id prefer that you donated your money to a worthy cause like http://mycharitywater.org/ that I plan to change all my donation links to as soon as I can track them.

    Hey Michael,

Even though in Back up Settings > History, it says the backup is complete there's no WordPressBackup folder created in Dropbox (and no backup file) and I didn't see a backup in the "Temporarily store your database backup in this folder" wp-content/backups folder.

Checked wp-config.php but it didn't have DISABLE_WP_CRON so not set to true. I also added the exception to the .htaccess file but still not working:

    <Files "wp-cron.php">
    Allow from All
    Satisfy Any
    </Files>

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey mate,

    Are scheduled posts working?

Hi Micheal, is that question for me?

I just set it up a couple of hours ago and used "Backup Now".

@WSNKM That was a question for you. The plugin uses WordPress' cron system. A good way to test its working is to make sure scheduled posts are working.

If they do not work the problem is with your WordPress setup, if they do then the issue lies in the plugin.

Oh....I don't have any scheduled posts. New site. Should I set one up or is there another way to test it?

Hey Micheal, I tested the post scheduler and it's working.

Thought I posted this days ago....

Ah, on the php.ini file. WP didn't install one so just added it just in case.

I feel really stupid but just in case someone else does this, I'll post my embarrassing mistake - what I think was the problem. In Backup Settings on the bottom, notice it says Exclude. Don't check/select any of these options if you want everything backed up. I had checked everything thinking it was include.

    It's working now.

    Thanks very much Micheal.

I'm also having trouble with this. The plugin will backup any or all of my WP files — except the only file I want backed up, which is the .sql dump. I don't see that anywhere.

I did add the wp-cron.php permissions to my .htaccess.

I have tried following the steps mentioned above but upon searching for DISABLE_WP_CRON in my wp-config file I see that there is no mention of it at all. I do however have a wp-cron.php file in the same directory.

Scheduled posts don't seem to be working so I am pretty sure its a cron issue I'm having, if anyone has any device or help to offer I would be very grateful.

Ditto. Tried everything in this thread, but it still asks me to go get a cup of coffee while it does nothing. Any solutions?

Hi. I am having this problem as well. I am waiting for a backup by other means because I don't want to touch the site again until it is backed up as the site was destroyed yesterday by a bad plugin.

Anyway, a nice addition to this plugin might be some kind of error report if something doesn't go well. As it is, it is reporting to me that backups have gone well even though I know otherwise, and there is no way for me to fix it unless I get some information. Could you put this on your list of enhancements?

I am going to try the .htaccess modification as soon as my backup is done. I have checked wp-config.php to see if there is a DISABLE_WP_CRON in there and it is not.

I also purchased the email notification and it does not seem to work. I click the check and give it an email address, but it just comes back with the example email address that is in there to start with.

    Oh well,.

I just want mine to backup the database, so I have all content excluded (I back that up separately). It reports the backup being successful. but I see now .sql file saved in my dropbox

    Hi Mike,

I've been working on this problem for hours now, without any result.
Short and sweet, the Backup Now is not working on one of my sites.
It IS working on another site...

On the non-working site I've added the bit of code to my .htaccess file.
Nothing of the DISABLE_CRON etc. is present in my wp-config.php file.

All in all it looks fine (I've authorized Dropbox as well and have plenty of space left).

The non-working site has a lot more plugins then the working site.
Would you know of any conflicts?

I'm "recovering" from my all my sites being hacked and am looking for a good backup alternative.

    Hope you can help.

BTW, running v1.2.2 of your plugin and WP v3.4.1

    thx
    Chris

    Hi Michael,

    Further to my latest comment:

I have deactivated W3 Total Cache and your plugin seems to work.

Would you know any specifics re this conflict?

    thx

My backup only worked after checking the option to "Store backup in a subfolder of the WPB2D folder" in the Backup Settings of the plugin.

The store in subfolder option should not affect the backup at all.

Regarding cache - Yep this could be a problem if you use full page cache with apache mod rewrite. Doing this will stop users requests from hitting PHP and activating the cron.

The best way around this is to add a call to wp-cron in your servers real cron tab.

mmm, that's a bit too far fetched for me.

Could you give any specific code for that to put where?

Or is it something my Host should do?

    thx

I had the same problem. Today I discovered the plugin wasn't working anymore on three sites. With two sites I only had to authorize again with dropbox. The other one was a bit more tricky. In the end I deleted the plugin and reinstalled it. Now it's working again.
