   Wouldnt the login widget be a security risk since the front shop page and the sidebar don't use SSL?

   I doubt it. It's no different to the wordpress login system, and if your really concerned there are ways to enforce SSL when logging in (http://codex.wordpress.org/Administration_Over_SSL).
