   Hi,

   I have two separate WP installs in one domain, e.g. http://www.domainname.com and http://www.domainname.com/second

   Do I need to install and activate W3 Total Cache in both wp-content directories, or will one install in the root directory suffice?

   Yes you need to install and configure it twice.
