i've already configured w3 total cache the way i wanted to so now i want to set my .htaccess permissions to 444 because for some reason, every time i empty my cache, w3TA modifies my htaccess file by putting it's settings above my main htaccess settings. the reason i dont want them above my main htaccess settings is because w3 total cache gets rid of my permanent redirect and the only way to fix that is by putting my main setting above w3 total cache settings.

my concerns are, does w3 total cache need write permission on htaccess to function properly and or change settings or empty the cache after the initial setup?
