I get this error when trying to install (successfully installed it on another blog on another server).
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
/homepages/.../wp-content/uploads could not be created, please run following command:
chmod 777 /..../wp-content
I have set the top permissions to 777 (not subfolders)
I also attempted to manually create the w3tc folder and set 777 permissions to it.
Any idea what might be happening?
PHP version 5.2.11
MySQL 5.0.89

Did you also create and change permissions for the wp-content/uploads/ directory?

Sorry for the delay in answering. Out of town and only so much you can do from a phone.
The top permissions - not recursed are set for the wp-content and the wp-content/uploads directory. Both are 777
I am also setting up on bluehost - not sure if that information is relevant or not?

I think it's best to try to re-install the plugin or submit a bug submission if it you get the plugin active. Many users on bluehost have this issue and no one has provided access yet for me to figure out why.

Mine are 100% dummy/test sites at this point so I could grant you the necessary access if you needed to do some figuring and testing.
NONE of the current blogs there are critical in any way. Though I hope to move those on soon.
The plugin is an amazing idea and execution. I just can't wait to get it all running.

Same here...but is the plugin trying to create an "Uploads" folder when it already exists ?

OK I am was missing something.
the bizarre /homepages/...wp-content... mentioned above was NOT the site on the new server. I moved from 1and1 to Bluehost and did not change the location of the write settings under tools.
I have spotted what I believe is a bug and I am reporting that with access to the ftp and to the wordpress blog. It is unrelated to this issue. This one is solved.
ANSWER: Make sure that you go to setting/miscellaneous and insure that it says wp-content/uploads or where you intend you files to go. NOTE: no forward slash.
