Hi,
-I created a subdomain cdn.domain.com
-From the "general settings" page I enabled CDN for Generic Mirror
-On the CDN settings page I added cdn.domain.com for the hostname
-I hit the "test mirror" button and got a successful test.
-I was then told to add a CNAME for cdn.domain.com directing to http://www.domain.com
From that point the "test mirror" gave an error and after a day or what the website is displayed without any images.
Have I missed something?

cdn. doesn't need to be a CNAME, it should be it's own A record, it depends on how your server is configured.
I followed the following tutorial for setting it up:

So it's incorrect?
If it's not working for you, then indeed it's not correct in your case. Have you asked your webhost or CDN provider for help? If you're doing self hosting and don't need to do FTP upload the generic mirror is fine so long as you have your server configured perfectly for that use case.
