I’m noticing the EXACT same thing happening on my site. Well, I guess it’s time to look for a NEW plugin. UGH!
I have the same. That is a Youtube bug.
The change was made on YouTube’s end. They detect the embed size and don’t play a video resolution that is larger than the embed size. It looks like YouTube now ignores that HD parameter.
This can be proven by maximizing your browser and visiting this URL (the URL I use to embed)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=wF8H1Wh-Brc%26hd%3D1
Note in the bottom right that it says 1080p or 720p (HD).
Now try resizing your browser fairly small and then refreshing the page. It will now be playing back the 480p version even though it’s the same URL.
@ Viper007Bond
Is it not possible you do something with this: hd=1&vq=hd720
Check same youtube video, its playing 720p HD even after resize ect
Video: http://www.youtube.com/v/wF8H1Wh-Brc&hd=1&vq=hd720
Ok i have a fix for this. I edit the file “vipers-video-quicktags.php”
search for > if ( $atts[‘hd’] )
$hd = ‘&hd=1’;
change/edit into > if ( $atts[‘hd’] )
$hd = ‘&hd=1&vq=hd720’;
now all youtube vids are played in 720p
don’t forget to select “Enable HD video” in the plugins settings. I tested all video’s on my site and its working great!
If I resize my browser small and then visit http://www.youtube.com/v/wF8H1Wh-Brc&hd=1&vq=hd720 then I still get 360p video.
I also don’t see the vq
parameter in the list of valid parameters:
https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters
Side note, the hd
parameter is deprecated:
https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters#hd
Why should you resize a browser when viewing a video ? When i add vq to the plugin file, it plays all vids on 720p quality. Thats the important thing for me (on normal screen). Why should i resize my browser and then start a video ? makes no sense. Its up to the person who visit the page. For now i have found a simple solution to play hd vids, and allot of people are happy @my website to view the vids on hd again.
Night Vision – yes, works for me too, thanks! 😉
Doesn’t work after update.
Why should you resize a browser when viewing a video ?
You wouldn’t — it was a demonstration that YouTube is ignoring all quality parameters that you pass to it and is instead going off how big the video embed size is when deciding what quality to use. If it’s small, even if you say “play 720p”, it won’t.
There is no way that I know of to force HD video playback with the standard YouTube embed.
It works for 6.4.4

The Fix mentioned here that is.
