   The avatar I'm trying to use is okay, I mean it's a GIF file, 50x50 px sized, and it's not too heavy - 8 KB.

   But it says "Unable to resize image" when I try and upload it.

   When I try uploading one that is 60x60px, it works perfectly.

   Any thoughts?

   Just consider that you are not uploading avatars to the gallery. You upload pictures that can be used as also as avatar. You have to upload bugger images to get a nice quality.

   I would recommend not to upload images less than 300x300. Think that the image you upload to be used as avatar is also shown in gallery and it will be resized to the large gallery size.

   If i wanted to change this? could I? since I'm not going to use the gallery? And actually, if I did use the gallery, what does it do? Does it let users put images on their personal profile pages?

   Yes, you can do it with some programing. And yes, the gallery allows users to put images on their profile pages.
